[ One of the ruddy hawks of the Southern Greenwood alights on a nearby window, branch or stone, screeching and flapping its wings. It has sharp eyes, like all from the Maechenibryth, but waits patiently to have the small scroll attached to its foot unravelled. It reads in looping Drabbish:
Invitation for Lord Faramir of Emyn Arnen, Prince of Ithilien and Companion to the winter Yule festivities within I Othrann-in-Heneb, fortress of Thranduil Oropherion, Elvenking of the Maechenibryth.
To celebrate the holiday of the native Aelfen clans, all guests are welcome to remain within the mountainhome until from 25th December until early January for music and merriment. Bed and board provided. Please bring this invitation with you and make your way south along the forest river where marchwardens will find your party and act as escorts. To confirm attendance, please attach an appropriate message to the hawk. Alternatively, contact Thranduil via locket.
The hawk, if needed, will await a snack along with the RSVP before flying off. ]
[ Faramir blinks and starts in surprise. He was not expecting such an invitation, but he finds some tidbits from his own plate for the hawk and pens a short polite answer, before going to find Aragorn to ask for leave to go ]
To the Elvenking of the Maechenibyrth,
From Faramir of Emyn Arnen,
Greetings.
My thanks for your majesty's kind invitation, which I would be honored to attend, circumstances permitting.
Please pass my greetings to your son, as well, and tell him that I hope to see him soon.
{The bird will seek out Faramir restlessly and land long enough to drop a letter into his hands. Then he will take the sky again, circling in case Faramir wishes to send a reply.
Aragorn's handwriting is shakier than usual, but it is unmistakable:}
My friend,
Six days have passed since I awoke in the crypts of Caer Glaem. I journeyed to I Othrann-in-Heneb on the back of Ehtyarion, however I was in no fit state for anything but healing.
{Several ink dots linger here.}
Tis a cruel measure that the Monarchs took my Locket from me. I cannot put anyone's fears to rest save by other means of communication. It would be a great help if I could use your Locket, for one message, to determine if I might regain what has been lost.
{Even the short spurts of writing seem to tire him. More dots appear here.}
I pray you emerged from the battle unscathed. There could be no forgiveness for the one who slew you, I promise you.
[ Maglor cannot get in the gates of the Elvenking's Halls (not yet, and he is not so rude as that. Yet.) but he can get easily to the gates, and the gate wardens are so used to the Shadow-travelling bard by now that they only startle briefly when he shows up with Faramir before leaving.
Faramir for his part begs knowledge of where the Lord Aragorn is and for admittance to see him ]
{The guards check with Aragorn before allowing Faramir admittance. He is then guided to one of the rooms used for Healing. Aragorn is pale, bandaged but awake. He motions for Faramir to come closer as soon as he sees him.}
[ Faramir doesn't hesitate to hurry to his side and kneel by the bed, catching one of his hands and pressing a kiss to it ]
Oh Aragorn! Forgive me, forgive me. I should have stayed by your side. I am so glad to see you again beyond all hope. I... I am sure Lord Maglor knows.
No. {The word is forceful and he brings their heads together, pain written across his features.} She had a purpose for it. I know not what said purpose entails, but that was not why I fought her.
{His hands shake and he grits his teeth.}
I am sorrowful beyond words that you witnessed such a thing.
Even so. I failed my brother. I failed my father. The Steward's life is worth less than his king's. All I could do was guard your body and prevent its desecration. I could not even avenge you.
Your brother and your father chose how they lived and how they died. I am no different and you could not have swayed me from that battle. {His will has never been broken by another.} That your body did not lie beside mine; that you did not feel her blade is enough for me to be grateful.
I am not disappointed. {He doesn't want to imagine Faramir mourning over his body. It makes him sick with despair.} Your company would serve me well as long as you blame yourself no longer.
I will try Aragorn, but I cannot... stop seeing that scene. It haunts me, as few things have done. I even was granted a ring to bear me swiftly to the side of those who needed me, but it was not swift enough.
Do you possess foresight? {Like the Lady Galadriel? He knows the answer, but the question makes his point.} It would be a remarkable - and surprising - quality for any Man.
Then I wish you pleasant dreams of Eowyn and home. {Not nightmares of his death. That isn't fair for someone who tried to save him.} Any time you feel you have lost me, I will not be hard to find.
I do not, for I think it would hurt more to see her and know I could not wake to her at my side! But I think you will find it hard to shake me from your side, now.
You will wake to her by your side soon enough. {Please bring Faramir and Eowyn children into the world. He will be the best step-father.} I do not want to shake you.
In the past, I have forged friendships with Lords, Stewards and Kings, but they have not lasted beyond what needed to be accomplished. I know I would not be able to leave your side as I left theirs.
